But, prior to that, we will familiarize you with the significance of BHM (Black History Month) and other essential facts about this month.

So, let’s delve deep into the blog without squandering any time.

What Is Black History Month?

Black History Month is an annual commemoration that began in the United States and is also popular as African-American History Month. Governments in the United States and Canada have officially recognized it. Lately, the governments of Ireland and the United Kingdom have started recognizing it but in October.

Why Is BHM Celebrated?

To keep it short yet precise, BHM is celebrated to remember important black history people and events in the history of the African diaspora.

Besides, the reason behind observing it was to highlight African people's achievements in the United States. It commemorates all  African Americans throughout American history, from the earliest enslaved individuals carried over from Africa in the earlier 17th century to African Americans who live in the United States today. Thus, every February, National Black History Month acts as a celebration and a powerful message that Black history is American history, Black culture is American culture, and Black experiences are crucial to America's ongoing story.

On this account, WofSports is celebrating the legacy of different black sports players by offering products like Willie Lanier Signed Autographed 8x10— one of the most valuable NFL officially licensed products. In the latter section of the blog, we will make you near and dear to more products that will help you pay tribute to their contributions to history. So, keep reading if you want to stop running-of-the mill while celebrating black history month 2023.

When And Who Started BHM?

Carter G. Woodson was a scholar whose passion for honoring  African Americans' historical accomplishments resulted in the foundation of BHM, which has been observed every February since 1976. Woodson was adamant that  African Americans should be proud of their background and that all Americans should be aware of Black Americans' often-overlooked achievements. This is why he came up with the concept of honoring  African Americans during February. With this, a question pops up in our minds, i.e., why is February celebrated as BHM? That being said, let’s know the answer to this in the next section of the blog.

Why Is February Celebrated As BHM?

Carter G. Woodson, a renowned American historian who pioneered the subject of African American studies in the early twentieth century, has the answer.

February commemorates the births of two historical figures: U.S. President Abraham Lincoln (born February 12) and African American abolitionist and playwright Frederick Douglass (born February 14). Since Lincoln and Douglass died (in 1865 and 1895, respectively) on their birthdays, the Black community has recognized their contributions to African American freedom and civil rights. Therefore, by establishing Negro History Week in February, Woodson hoped to both honor Lincoln and Douglass' inestimable legacies. Additionally, broadening an already existing commemoration of the Black past. This includes not only the accomplishments of these two great individuals but also the history and achievements of  African Americans in general.
